Not every music lesson business is set up in the same way. Some music schools are set up to duplicate the founding teacher in order to allow that teacher to grow their studio and others are set up in a style to allow the music teacher to just operate as the sole teacher.

Here’s a list of different types of music lesson business setups:

Traditional: In-home or office space- teach lessons at your studio and your main income sources are Private Lessons, Group Classes and Workshops or Camps.

Traditional style set up for offering music lessons is where a music teacher will teach out of their own home, or rent a space elsewhere to teach. Generally they are set up in their teaching space as the sole music teacher and they offer lessons on the instruments they are able to teach proficiently. Usually teachers offer private one on one music lessons and also group lessons when they are effective for the students in their studio. This type of setup is great if you are just getting started or if have been teaching for a while. Some of the cons is that teachers may find it difficult to grow their businesses beyond their teaching because the entire reputation of their business is based solely off of them teaching. Also if the music teacher only offers one instrument it can be difficult to diversify your studio with multiple instruments and students often leave when they are interested in studying a different instrument.

Group Lesson Studio

Group lesson studio is pretty much operated in a similar style as a traditional music lesson studio except the music teacher offers lessons in group sessions which allows the instructor to grow their students as well as offer many additional benefits for the students. As we know group lessons provide an opportunity for students to socialize with peers, and also group lessons provide an opportunity for students to make friends in music lessons which can often be a great link in helping the student continue music studies. Some of the cons with only offering group lessons, is that it may be difficult if the student begins to progress and become very advance beyond their peers, it’s very difficult for that music student to remain in group sessions and therefore they will need an alternative to group lessons.

Travel to Client’s Homes

Traveling to student’s homes can work for you if you are just starting your music lesson business or if you have recently relocated to a new area. It’s convenient because you don’t have to provide your own location to teach and also you get to see how the student’s practice area is set up in their home and how their instrument is set up. Some of the cons may be, just having to deal with other interruptions going on in the home such as cooking dinner, cleaning, as well as siblings. Additionally if students don’t have a quality instrument in home, it can sometimes hinder your progress with the student.

Music School-Commercial Space

A music school set up in a commercial space generally functions with multiple music teachers offering music lessons through the school or a retail music instrument store. Music teachers can get paid to work their or they can rent space and teach their own students at the music school. The benefits are that as the music school owner you have the opportunity to grow your school and build into multiple locations, and as a teacher for the school you can come to work and not have to worry about enrolling students and dealing with payments. Some of the negatives are that growing a business has many challenges that you have to overcome very quickly and it may be extremely challenging to find staff that are on the same page you are on. As for negatives for the teachers that work for you, they may find it difficult to teach for a school if they aren’t getting as many students and it’s their main source of income.

Franchise, like School of Rock or a Toddler Music Program

Finally, a franchise school is wonderful because it’s pretty much already set up and outlined for you to do well with the program. Generally the franchise already has a strong following therefore making it easier to succeed. Additionally some of the negatives are that it may require a large lump sum of cash to get started with the program and if you decide that you want to start your own similar style business and leave the franchise it may be a conflict of interest with the contracts that you have signed with them.
