Staying true to who you are in business ...⠀ ⠀ Staying true to who you are in business ...⠀ ⠀ Let’s look at some ways you can stay true to who you are in the music lesson business: ⠀ ⠀ 1. Only offer instruments that you are able to fully teach! -I have seen music teachers who teach one instrument however they don’t want to turn away a potential student of an instrument that they don’t teach so, they offer to teach them anyway. ⠀ ⠀ 2. Create Business Hours at the time you can consistently be there. Why offer music lessons at a time that you know you can’t be there or don’t want to be there? -Canceling and reschedule your students can be very frustrating for parents who are counting on more consistency with you. ⠀ ⠀ 3. Create inspiring and challenging lesson plans. Really get involved with the student’s music progress and helping them to grow as musicians. ⠀ ⠀ 4. Stand up for your prices and policies-I don’t think it gets any easier or if it ever stops happening because you will always have customers who ask for a discount or who don’t want to pay the fees you have set. You will always have customers who don’t want to follow your studio policy but you have to stand up for your studio policies and your fees in business. What should I do about students failing behind the What should I do about students failing behind their peers?⁠ ⁠ It’s not uncommon for children who start music lessons at the same time and the same level to progress completely differently. Unfortunately, we have many parents who will compare their children. I believe that even in private lessons, students should be allowed to progress at their own pace. You can have students that seem very advanced who don’t practice at all, and at the same time have some who are very diligent and hardworking and just doesn’t make the same progress. ⁠ ⁠ Here are some suggestions I would consider making:⁠ 1. Keep encouraging your student, and acknowledge all that they have accomplished and worked hard on ⁠ 2.Give them assignments that challenge them. ⁠ 3. Work specifically on things they need to improve like note reading, rhythm, and practicing effectively. ⁠ ⁠ While some students just get certain things very easily others don't. People are different.⁠ ⁠ That is what I love most about being a private teacher, you get to work with each student one on one and each and everyone of my students get treated like the individuals that they are! I take the time to learn what their particular interests are, what are their strong points and how they compute information.⁠ ⁠ I’m such an analytical processor of information...so I’m always asking a million questions during the learning process! My music lesson business has now grown into a multi-teacher music school and has been in operation over the past 7 years. Some students just won’t be a good fit for your studio and that’s ok!
