13 YEARS IN THE MUSIC TEACHING INDUSTRY AND I AM SO HAPPY AND THANKFUL FOR MY JOURNEY!! IF I HAD KNOWN THE JOURNEY MY LIFE WOULD TAKE WHEN I DECIDED TO START MY OWN MUSIC LESSON BUSINESS WAY  BACK IN 2007, ALL THE OPPORTUNITIES I WOULD HAVE, THE PEOPLE I WOULD MEET-I WOULDN’T HAVE BELIEVED IT. MOST OF ALL I’M MOST IMPRESSED WITH MY SELF-GROWTH AND BELIEF IN MYSELF.

HERE’S WHAT I’VE LEARNED & WHAT I WISH I KNEW BACK THEN…..

WHILE YOU ARE TEACHING CHILDREN TO LEARN & UNDERSTAND THE COMPONENTS OF MUSIC, YOU ARE SIMULTANEOUSLY TEACHING THEM SELF-CONFIDENCE, TO HAVE GRACE FOR THEMSELVES, SELF-AWARENESS & MOST OF ALL THAT FAILURE IS THE MAIN INGREDIENT NEEDED TO ACHIEVE SUCCESS.

EACH STUDENT WILL BE IMPACTED BY THEIR EXPERIENCE WITH WORKING WITH YOU. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE MORE TO SAY TO ENCOURAGE THEIR UNIQUENESS THAN ANY CORRECTIONS.

YOU DON’T ACTUALLY TEACH YOUR STUDENT ANYTHING, YOUR JOB IS TO SIMPLY GUIDE AND CREATE AWARENESS OF SELF WITH THE STUDENT. IT MAY TAKE YEARS BEFORE THEY ACTUALLY LEARN OR COMPREHEND A CONCEPT

PAY ATTENTION TO HOW STUDENTS PROCESS INFORMATION. THAT WILL HELP WHEN GIVING DIRECTION TO UNDERSTAND THE INTERPRETATION OF A PIECE OF MUSIC OR A PHRASE.

YOU MEET PEOPLE FOR A REASON. STUDENTS ARE THERE TO LEARN MUSIC HOWEVER THEY WILL GO ON IN LIFE TO DO MANY OTHER THINGS WHERE MUSIC MAY NOT BE THE MAIN INTEREST. SO FORGET ABOUT THINGS LIKE PERFECTIONISM AND TIME FRAMES OF WHERE THEY SHOULD BE ON A PROGRESSION SCALE. ALLOW THEM TO BE WHO THEY ARE.

THE AVERAGE STUDENT MAY NOT BE LAZY OR DISINTERESTED…JUST MORE SO DISTRACTED AND LACKING THE ABILITY TO FOCUS. AS EACH GENERATION PROGRESSES MANY THINGS CONTRIBUTE TO THE FOUNDATION AND LEARNING ENVIRONMENT. BE PATIENT AND ASSIST THEM WITH ATTAINING FOCUS DURING THEIR TIME WITH YOU.

YOUR BUSINESS WILL GROW! CELEBRATING YOUR SMALL WINS ALONG THE WAY IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN FOCUSING ON WHERE YOU AREN’T AT YET AND WHERE YOU WISH YOU COULD BE!

THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS GOOD MUSIC OR BAD MUSIC…THERE ARE ONLY MOMENTS IN TIME. 😉

WHAT ARE SOME THINGS YOU’VE LEARNED TEACHING MUSIC? & IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WISH YOU KNEW BACK WHEN YOU FIRST STARTED TEACHING??
